Crossbreeding Guide
Crossbreeding is the central mechanic of Honeycomb: The World Beyond. Combine alien species through grafting and allogamy to create new organisms with hybrid traits.
Crossbreeding lets you combine two alien species in your laboratory to produce a hybrid organism. The hybrid inherits traits from both parents, opening up new resource production, defensive capabilities and research possibilities.
How crossbreeding works
As Hennessy, a bioengineer stranded on Sota7, your scientific background gives you the tools to analyze and combine the planet's alien life forms. Crossbreeding is performed in a laboratory module at your base, using specimens collected during exploration.
Two crossbreeding methods are described in official material:
Grafting
Grafting physically combines parts of two different species to create a new organism. The hybrid inherits structural traits from both parent species — such as the root system of one plant combined with the fruiting body of another.
Pre-launch note: Exact grafting mechanics, compatible species pairs and the laboratory interface will be documented after the game launches on September 8, 2026.
Allogamy
Allogamy works through cross-pollination between different species. Unlike grafting, which is a physical combination, allogamy produces offspring through genetic mixing. The resulting organism carries genetic traits from both parents.
Pre-launch note: Whether allogamy produces different results from grafting with the same species pair, and whether it requires different specimens or resources, will be verified after launch.
The laboratory
The laboratory is a base building module where all crossbreeding experiments take place. It is described as part of the modular base system alongside greenhouses and defensive structures.
Setting up a laboratory should be among your first priorities after establishing a base, as crossbreeding is essential for creating organisms that produce resources, defend your outpost, or unlock further research paths.

Crossbreeding FAQ
How does crossbreeding work in Honeycomb?
Crossbreeding combines two alien species to create a hybrid organism with traits from both parents. The two known methods are grafting and allogamy, both performed in the laboratory module at your base.
What is grafting in Honeycomb?
Grafting is a crossbreeding method where you physically combine parts of two different species to create a new organism. The resulting hybrid inherits structural traits from both parent species. Details will be added after the game launches on September 8, 2026.
What is allogamy in Honeycomb?
Allogamy is a crossbreeding method based on cross-pollination between different species. It produces offspring with genetic traits from both parent organisms. Detailed mechanics will be documented after launch.
Do you need a laboratory for crossbreeding?
Yes. The laboratory module is a base building component required for controlled crossbreeding experiments. Build it as one of your first modules to begin experimenting with species combinations.
Can you crossbreed any two species in Honeycomb?
This has not been confirmed yet. Whether all species are crossbreed-compatible or only certain combinations work will be documented after the game launches on September 8, 2026.
